Why are restaurant franchise locations referred to as "stores" instead of "restaurants"?

To me, there is a big difference between a store and a restaurant. A store sells merchandise, and a restaurant sells prepared ready to eat food. I find it very difficult to think of my local Pizza Hut or McDonalds location as a "store", but apparently, they are considered stores. Why?

They’re often referred to as both.

Likely, the reason “store” is used is because they are selling a retail good, as opposed to a restaurant that is original and specialized.
